Most people who name their vehicles give them girl names. Maybe it’s because I’m a girl, but I give my cars boy names, specifically my German Nazi War Wagons, aka, my Volkswagens. My first VW was a Cabrio, and I named him Zippy Tater. I suppose Zipper Tater is a gender-neutral name, but to me all VWs except the new Beetles look like boys. My second VW was a Golf TDI, and his name was Franz, but I liked to call him Frankie. My third and current VW, a Golf Sportwagen TDI (I wanted that extra foot of space in case I decided to move into my car after I graduated college), is named Jack.

When Jeremy and I were looking for vans, we had a few requirements. It had to be a high-roof Sprinter with a V6 and 170” wheelbase. We really wanted a van that wasn’t a boring color, but white and grey* seemed to dominate the market. One day, whilst** perusing TruCar for the shell of our future home on wheels, I stumbled across a big, beautiful, green beast. We instantly fell in love, dropped everything, and drove to New Jersey to make that sexy green van our own.

Jeremy and I were both in the Navy, and he was a Torpedoman’s Mate. Our sweet new green van just happened to be the same color as a MK 48 torpedo. As soon as Jeremy said, “Mark,” as in MK, I knew what we were going to him.

*I’ve been spelling ‘grey’ with an ‘e’ my entire life (at least I think so), and ProWritingAid just told me this is the UK spelling. Gray. Grey. Yeah, I still like ‘grey’ better.

**Might as well keep going with the UK thing.
